The companies released a phone directorty entitled Small Businesses for an Equitable Economy that list s EFCA supporters ranging from bakeries to clothingg stores tomoving services. The directory was releasefd by Employee FreeChoice Colorado, a grouop of union members and other supportersa of the so-called “card check” bill. Union workers make 33 perceny more in wages and are 52 percent more likely to havehealth care, the group said in a news “We have a fundamental economic problem: The middlde class is disappearing in America,” said Terri owner of Denver-based Gate City Moving.
“Congreszs needs to pass the Employee Free Choicer Act because it is one of the most importang steps we can take to strengthen our middlwe class and turn our economy around.” The legislation woulrd allow a company’s employees to unioniz e if a majority of them check off boxesd on cards saying that they’d like to do so rathefr than requiring a secret-ballot It also would toughen penalties against business leaders who try to interferee in union votes and woulds require contract disputes to go to bindinvg arbitration if not settled withinh 120 days.
Most Colorado business leaders have said that passingy the law could lead to an increasde in union intimidation tacticws to get workers to sign their cardss and would lead businesses to expand operations overseas ratherthan domestically. Members of the Coloradop Association of Commerceand Industry, the and executives of smalpl and Hispanic businesses from the state have flow n to Washington, D.C., to lobby U.S. Sens. Mark Udalkl and Michael Bennet to voteagainst it. While neithefr senator has taken a public stance onthe bill, most of the attentiohn has been focused on the newlt appointed Bennet, since Udalp co-sponsored similar legislation while he was a member of the U.S. Houses in 2008.
On Tuesday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee chidedr Bennet for still failingb to givehis opinion, even though he announcee his support for U.S. Supremd Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor aftera 25-minutd meeting with her. “It is inexplicable that a quici 25-minute meet-and-greet, weeks before any hearings are even held on her is sufficient for Michae l Bennet to support a lifetime appointment to theSupremwe Court,” NRSC spokeswoman Amber Wilkersonb said in a news release.
“Ye t nearly five months of intense discussions and debate with constituents and felloww lawmakers are not enough for him to clarifyy his position on the card checok legislation that could impact thousands ofColorado

Streetcar work in progress - Charlotte Business Journal:

http://cyavp.com/page/646-656-rapidshare.html
This month, a streetcar advisort committee made several recommendations to City Council in the latesf bid to accelerate the constructionb schedule that currently callsd for a start date in 2018 and completion five years Support from both sides of the political as well as business andcivicf leaders, gave the streetcar renewed momentum during the past But economic reality has slammed on the brakes. “I woulrd hope everyone sees this as an opportunity to stimulater the economyin Charlotte,” says Ron Carter, president at and chairman of the streetcar committee. “I don’ft see it as a drag.
” Cartedr and other boosters say it’ difficult to put a timeframe on building the streetca r until further planning and engineering workis completed. Amonf the tasks: zeroing in on the now estimatedat $457 million. As recently as 2006, the price tag was $300 million. City Manager Curt Walton recommendecd funding the additional planning and study during a recentgbudget retreat, with an expected $8 million cost. If the city signs off on that idea, it wouldf likely be late-2010 before the additionalp studies and design workare finished.
“Then we’llk know what we’re dealing with,” Walton A city-funded $250,000 consultant’s report completed earlier this year predicted a surgr inproperty values, tax revenue and developmentf along the 10-mile corrdiodr once the streetcar is up and running. The proposee route runs from Beatties Ford Road through uptown and Elizabeth toEastland Mall. It could be builtg all at once or in depending on political will andavailablw funding.
Potential funding sources suggested by the consultang and the advisory committee include usingb some of the new property taxes created by the projecrt to pay back larger a neighborhood ordistrict tax, federal and statr money and a possible expanded locaol transit tax. Jim Palermo, committee vice chair and executive-in-residencer at Johnson and Wales says one idea broached by the consultants is a Taxing nonprofit organizations alongthe route, including churches and hospitals. Everyone on the committee is realistid about finding money in thenear future. “It’s Palermo says.
“But a down economyy is the time when you plan forwhat you’ll do when you come out of First, though, council must approve the initialk $8 million — a prospect that elicits differingf opinions among members. “It’s probably a year says John Lassiter, a Republican who heads the economic-development Lassiter supports the streetcar but believexsthe city’s current financiao pressures leave no room for even the initial funding for the Lassiter’s mayoral rival and Democratic colleague, Anthonyy Foxx, offers a differing view.
Because the streetcar study wouldx bea one-time cost, the city shoul d be able to find a way to approvd the money in the fiscalo 2010 budget that begins in July. “Therwe is some capacity in our budger to borrow to do something like he says.

Gemini Solar president Kristins Peterson said the tax credits that were initiateds by the 2005 Energy Bill and extended by Congress last Octobed for eight years have already been factored into the price the firm submitted toAustimn Energy.
Such tax credits amount to 30 percenft ofa project’s development cost, but she declined to disclosd the ITC amount Gemini is expecting to receiver from the Webberville project. The last-minute itemas added to the agreement by City Counciol pertain to possible additional loan guarantees and cash grant s that could be provided through the recentlgy enacted federalstimulus package, Peterson The council also amendedc its approval with a requesy that the city create a stakeholder process with a council-appointede task force.
Comprising members from all sidesd ofthe issue, the task force woulc formulate a renewable energy plan and providw input before a project is selected by Austinb Energy for bid or proposal. The task force would also incorporats conservation, the current financialp climate, updated demand forecasts, changing technology, and state/federao stimulus programs. The solar array is scheduled to be operating byDecember 2010. City Council’ss approval came after an ad hoccoalition — called the Solar Electricx Manufacturers in Texas, or SEMI Texas requested Gemini Solar to restructured its deal so U.S. companies can participate in the project, which is estimatedf to be worth $180 million.
The coalition proposed a series ofthred 10-megawatt projects to give local panel makers time to get their plants operating in time to suppl the project. Instead, Gemini plans to get the project’ s 220,000 solar panels from a Chinesemanufacturer . The SEMI Texazs coalition lists five founding TekSUN PV, Apache-Solar Corp., , Energy Semiconductor Corp. and Solar The restructuring suggested by the coalition would givesuch start-upp companies an early boost and effectivelyt seed fund a local sola industry, said group organizer Dan founder of local solar energy company He points out that the city and Austimn Chamber of Commerce are eager to establish such green-collar jobs.
“If people could be creative in their they would see this is he said. But Councilman Brewster McCracke said procurement laws prevent the restructurinv without repeating thebid Also, dividing the project into three phases coulsd negate the economies of scale that reducre the cost of such projects, said Paul Hudson, chairma n of the Center for the Commercialization of Electricityu Technologies in Austin. Austin Energy officials declined to commenft on the Gemini deal except to say the sourcwe of thepanels isn’t a major concern comparedd with getting the best price.
The city-ownee utility referred questions toGemink Solar, which is planning to complete the projectr with financial backing by MMA Renewablw Ventures and Suntech Power. MMA Renewablew Ventures, a division of Baltimore-based , also declinee to comment. Citing the cost of the Webberville project and the recen acquisition of MMA by aSpanish company, Carole Keeto n Strayhorn, an Austin mayoral candidate, urged the counciol not to contract with Gemini Solar. Althougy Austin is being positioned to become a hub of cleantecjh innovation bylocal officials, no Texas companiex are ready to produce solar panels, industrt officials said.
Eight to 10 solar companies are considerinvg Austin as a location for future manufacturing plants because they can use the loca l worker pool from the semiconductor saidJose Beceiro, director of cleab energy for the Austinh Chamber of Commerce. Austin-basedc HelioVolt Corp., which develops thin-film solae energy panels using apatented technology, is the only locaol solar panel maker that’s in the pipeline. The compang raised $101 million in venture capitallin 2007, but it isn’t scheduled to reach full-scale production until 2010. HelioVolt foundere B.J. Stanbery and two company spokesmen didn’t respond to requestxs for comment. Several U.S.
companies, such as Massachusetts-basefd and Maryland-based Sun Edison LLC, are capable of producinhg enough panels to supply the saidCraig Overmiller, one of the founders of “Thee city of Austin and the City Council reallh need to rethink” the Webberville said Overmiller, who is not a part of the coalitio n urging the city to modifyu the Gemini deal. “I think they rushed into Austin Energy wouldpay $250 million, $10 million a year for 25 for the electricity the solar array would generate.
Once it’s Gemini Solar would be eligiblde for anestimated $60 millioh — about one-third the project’sd estimated cost — through the federalp investment tax credit program. Earlier this week, Austij Energy general manager Roger Duncanj issued a memorandum indicating that Gemini Solar hasagreer “that the value of the [investment tax credit] benefits will be shares with Austin Energy.

Wiring circuit boards for success - Houston Business Journal:

http://aworkingshoppingcart.com/index.php?register=yes
Nick Barbin, co-founder, president and CEO, said that the which designs and makes the boards on a small is always searching for new customers to replace those who fold orget acquired. “I would have to say we’ve had complete turnover on our custome r list maybe two or thresetimes over,” he said. But that’s a game that Pleasanton-based Optimuk Design has been winning. From 2006 to 2008, the company’s revenue grew 138 perceng — to $13.14 million. And it is on pace to grow 20 percent to 40 percentin 2009. The compant has been profitable every year sincd its foundingin 1991.
The company’s secret has been its willingness to look for new Barbin and his partners at first kept the firm small with about 8 to15 employees. And they only did layourt and design ofthe boards, partnering with manufacturers to producee them. But at the urginhg of some of the company’s customers, Optimum Design addedd the manufacturing side in2001 — and that’a been a catalyst for growth. Today, the companyg has about 50 employees, and it’z hiring this year, probably four to five peoplew for the manufacturing side of the Another successful strategy has been choosing theright customers.
It mostly works with companiesz doing work for the military or makingmedical instruments. Both of those have fairl inelastic demand, and both industries have traditionally contractedwith on-shore companies, rathefr than looking to India and Chinza for cheaper deals. But Barbin says that the company’s ability to identify strong markets to chase has helpedxit grow. “In this industry you go as your customers he said. “There are a lot of companies that are some of our competitorx where their focus is aparticulatr industry. If they’re really focusedf on telecom, they’re suffering righgt now, but 10 years ago they were doingy great.
” The third factor that sets Optimum Design apartg is that itstays small. The compangy only builds high-end boards that are extremelyh complicated, and they only fill orders that rangee from 100to 10,000 It’s that last factor that keepz it relatively safe from much bigger and cheapefr competition, said Jim Walker, who covers the industrh for . Walker said that almost all of the biggest printecd circuit board companies are in Theonly U.S. companies that survive are ones that aremakinf high-end or prototype boards that eventually get shipped off to overseasz foundries to get mass-produced.
Walker also said that the industry is ripe for consolidation but that companies like Optimum Design are fairly insulated from the firsg wave ofthose acquisitions, because they’re too small to make an impacr on larger companies’ bottom lines. One of Optimum Design’s customers, an aerospace company that askexd not to be identified for thisarticler (Optimum signs non-disclosure agreements with many of its makes equipment for the militar y and uses Optimum Design for its printed circuity boards. One of the engineers at the company, said that the firm used to make itsown boards, but in it contracted out the work due to budger cuts.
Randy said he rarelh finds problems with the product and that the company is now startint to work more closely with Optimum Design sinc it has run three boardxs through theentire process. “They admitted ... that they actually cost a littlw bit more than the guy next but we have experienced the high quality fromthem that’sz kept us coming back,” he And Barbin says that Randy’s attitude is what makeas the company successful. There are a couple of hundred printed-circuit-board companiex in the Bay Area, he said. But by offering the full and keepingquality high, they’ve been able to find “The designers we have here are he said.

What circumstances led you to yourcurrenr position? Following graduate school in Los I found myself in Bostob doing policy work for a gubernatoriak campaign. Once the campaigmn ended, I had an opportunity to returbto Nashville, where I had previously receiver my undergraduate education. While initiallyh drawn to furtherpolicy work, I found that understandingy the funding mechanisms and processes of public financd would be a valuable and versatilee area of knowledge. What has been your bigges t professional mistake? How did you overcome it? Once, I found that a miscommunicationb had resulted in a delay in payment to a and it ended up involving more partiesw and more headachesthan necessary.
From that point I tried to be more diligent in explaining the timing and expectations to thevarious parties. Making sure everyoned involved understands their role in the big picture makes them better at performinbg theirnecessary roles. What would you tell othedr younger business leaders to do tofind success? Findinyg success when you’re younger can be difficult. You’r e ambitious, and you feel like you have big ideas that will makea difference, but finding a receptivd outlet isn’t always Temper some of this enthusiasn with patience, and be careful how you define It takes a lot of talented peoplw a while to find and it often takes time for good ideas to come to Work hard, be flexible, treat others with respect, be honesyt with yourself, and realize that success can be subjective.
What was your firsg job? Lifeguard. How did it prepare you for a futurw career? It taught me how to balancde the customer-oriented tasks (ensuring safety and enjoyment) with the technical tasksx (cleaning, sanitizing and repair), and how to deal with the unexpectex (inclement weather, fecal contamination). Everyu job I’ve had since then has requiree thesame concepts: customer technical production and contingency plans or processes to deal with the rando m things that come up. Who has been your biggestf mentor, and what is the most impactfullesson he/shs has taught you? My father.
He provided an exampled of hard work, integrity and a sense of perspectivwe that has served me well both professionally and with mycivic involvement. Perhapsd the most impactful lesson he taughf me was the importance of preparingy for each task as if it were the most importanty thing to do at that Tothis day, there are times when I remins myself that little things deserve time and for they make a difference with more of the big thingsa than we often What does Nashville need to help retain and attrac top young talent?
