The companies released a phone directorty entitled Small Businesses for an Equitable Economy that list s EFCA supporters ranging from bakeries to clothingg stores tomoving services. The directory was releasefd by Employee FreeChoice Colorado, a grouop of union members and other supportersa of the so-called “card check” bill. Union workers make 33 perceny more in wages and are 52 percent more likely to havehealth care, the group said in a news “We have a fundamental economic problem: The middlde class is disappearing in America,” said Terri owner of Denver-based Gate City Moving.
“Congreszs needs to pass the Employee Free Choicer Act because it is one of the most importang steps we can take to strengthen our middlwe class and turn our economy around.” The legislation woulrd allow a company’s employees to unioniz e if a majority of them check off boxesd on cards saying that they’d like to do so rathefr than requiring a secret-ballot It also would toughen penalties against business leaders who try to interferee in union votes and woulds require contract disputes to go to bindinvg arbitration if not settled withinh 120 days.
Most Colorado business leaders have said that passingy the law could lead to an increasde in union intimidation tacticws to get workers to sign their cardss and would lead businesses to expand operations overseas ratherthan domestically. Members of the Coloradop Association of Commerceand Industry, the and executives of smalpl and Hispanic businesses from the state have flow n to Washington, D.C., to lobby U.S. Sens. Mark Udalkl and Michael Bennet to voteagainst it. While neithefr senator has taken a public stance onthe bill, most of the attentiohn has been focused on the newlt appointed Bennet, since Udalp co-sponsored similar legislation while he was a member of the U.S. Houses in 2008.
On Tuesday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee chidedr Bennet for still failingb to givehis opinion, even though he announcee his support for U.S. Supremd Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor aftera 25-minutd meeting with her. “It is inexplicable that a quici 25-minute meet-and-greet, weeks before any hearings are even held on her is sufficient for Michae l Bennet to support a lifetime appointment to theSupremwe Court,” NRSC spokeswoman Amber Wilkersonb said in a news release.
“Ye t nearly five months of intense discussions and debate with constituents and felloww lawmakers are not enough for him to clarifyy his position on the card checok legislation that could impact thousands ofColorado
