Networking firms in Silicon Valley see stimulus potential in their customers - bizjournals:

ysynut.wordpress.com
billion in stimulus money the federal government planas to spend to improve broadband access is viewed asa “wait and situation for Silicon Valley networking companies. As in, whilr waiting for the government’s rules on how and where the money can be they are seeing what their customers need for projectsx backed by thestimulus spending. Giants such as are vying for chunkzs ofthe funding, but even the valley’s smallerd “arms dealers” (as one wit put it) are determiningy how to help customers apply for the potentially lucrative grants — because if those customers get grant they will need equipment. Of the total, the U.S.
Commercre Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration willdistributed $4.7 billion to build broadband infrastructure in underserver areas, deliver broadband to public safet agencies and stimulate demand through training and education. The remaining $2.5 billiob will be governed by the Rural Utilitiesz Service underthe U.S. Department of Agriculture for ruralbroadband development. The final rules governing the broadbaned provisions are expected to be releasedin June. Companies say it coulf be the end of June beforw the two agencies administering the money will star takinggrant applications. It could be Decembedr before the money is readyto go.
Or the finalizatioj of the rules and the notice of funds becoming availabler couldhappen simultaneously. “In the end, this is about creating jobs, so the more jobs you’re able to creatde with your proposal, the more support you’res likely to get,” said Rich Wonders, executivw vice president at Paris-based . “Yoiu need to lay out your advocach plan and start gathering support at the state andfederal level.” Cisco is working on aspectsd of the stimulus package for governmengt and private-sector customers including broadband deployment and informatioj technology for health care.
“The ultimate impacr on Cisco will depend on how those customerse access and implement programs funded withstimulus money,” spokeswomab Jennifer Greeson said. Juniper Networks Inc. is workinh to get several product lines added to the list of vendo equipment approved by the Rural Utilities Public sector marketing manager Don Root said that because much of the stimulusd funding is aimedat smaller, rural many Juniper customers already have local expertisde in applying for grants, and Juniper is helpingy as needed. Wonders said it’s hard for Alcatel-Lucent to determine how responses to the government should look becauswe the parametersremain undefined.
“I won’tt pretend we’ve figured it out. The bill is not just lookingt to give consumers accesw to faster broadband so they candownloax YouTube,” Wonders said, “but to connec t patients to doctors and students to schools, and the list goes on and Alcatel’s IP routing division is based in Mountaibn View, and it has the No. 2 marketf share behind Cisco inIP “edge routing,” which optimizess routes and load distribution betweeh networks.
There’s a notion that even a basiv presence of broadband makesd anarea served, but Wonders said a perso doesn’t have to drive very far from San Jose or San Franciscl to find areas that are Alcatel has presented 11 customer workshops and disseminated information to more than 10,00 0 customers on broadband stimuluz in the past two months, and it is helpinf customers draft grant applications. When the ruleas are published, the company will post them on a Web site aimee atrural broadband, broadband4all.com/alu.
Covad Communications the San Jose-based broadband service company, is examinin g two aspects of the stimulus targeting smalland medium-size businessesa across the country to upgrade their connectivity speeds at lowee prices, and looking at underserved areas to offer higher bandwidth at lower But whether Covad will applty for the grants remains to be “We are actively evaluatint whether to apply. It comes down to economics becauser the broadbandstimulus … often involves some matching funds.
We’re seeing if we can raiss the capital to do our part of the and then pay for the operational saidJason Wakefield, Covad’s vice president of governmentakl and external affairs. “We need to make sure the businese casesupports it.” Like many of his networkingg cohorts, Tom Gallatin, founder and managing partner of data access switch maked Gigamon LLC, said his compan y probably won’t apply directly for any stimulus But Gigamon stands to benefitf when its customers apply for grants. Thosde customers include service providers VerizonCommunications Inc., AT&Ty Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp. as well as cable companies ComcastCable Co., Cox Communications Inc.
and Charter Communications Inc. “jI compare the stimulus packageto (President Dwight D.) Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway package in the 1950s,” Gallatin “It stimulated business ... and now we’rs doing the same thing

Rail industry fights legislation regulating prices - Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal:

hydiuco.blogspot.com
Anthony Hatch, of New York-based , said federa legislation that calls for removal of antitrust exemptions and the reform ofthe industry’s regulatorgy board won’t get passed unless it’a a compromise between customers and the rail The rail industry’s incentive for compromise is that the U.S. Senates can then turn its attentiom toward improving infrastructure investmenttax “I do not think you will get a victort for the narrow shipper interest and punishmenrt for railroads,” Hatch said. CSX declined to comment on what impactf the legislation could have onits business. Otheer Class I railroads are less shy.
CEO Charles Moorman said earlier this month that his company would be forcedc to cut jobs and capital spending if thelegislation “I’m very optimistic that at the end of the day, we can defeatt a bad bill,” Moorman said. “Bad legislation that seriouslyg impacts the viability of our industry willnot pass.” Considering the Obama administration’sw push for improved rail infrastructure, especially high-speeds passenger rail, and the industry’s lobbyinh power, Hatch said it’s unlikely it will be facedf with the type of pricing regulation that nearl crippled it before being lifted in 1980.
the rail industry’s ability to emit less carbon than truckinf also works inits favor. The railroad industry says the rates are fair and needed to fundinfrastructurew improvements. CSX Corp. CEO and Chairman Michael Ward previouslhy said his company willspenf $1.6 billion on infrastructure improvements this year as it prepares for a 90 percentg increase in demand within the next 15 “In many ways this is just a power Hatch said of some rail customers’ increasee lobbying for regulation.
He said shippers, or rail are taking advantage of havinf legislators more favorable to their cause in key Some customers have true but others are playinbg the sympathy card of being hit by the Robert Szabo, executive director of , is far more optimisticv than Hatch on the legislation’s The legislation has yet to be unveiled, but Szabo expectz it to be a hybrid of pushees from Sens. Jay Rockfeller, D-W. Va.
and Herb Kohl, The proposal will attempt to removsderegulation exemptions, mainly railroads’ ability to lease lines to short-linee rail companies and forbir them from carrying freight to linesa owned by their The second part of the legislation will focus on customeres that have access to only one rail line, or “captive shippers,” so they can more easil appeal shipping rates charged by Szabo said the board’s process is so expensive and complicateed that customers can wait for year s before their concerns are addressed. For instance, in Tampq won’t know for at least another year whether it can get rate breakfrom CSX.
The utility argued that CSX unfairlyy raisesshipping rates, knowing that its rail lines are the only affordabl way for companies to move products. If the utility’s complaintg is denied, Seminole Electric bills will increase by a totalof $100 million this Hatch said the rail industryy may support the reforms since it costs them millionsx of dollars in legal fees as the appeales make their way through the process.

S.A. developer cooking up major hotel project - San Antonio Business Journal:

ejoxot.wordpress.com
Now one of the city's most notecd developers and civic cheerleaders says he is working to brokerd a deal that could finallg bring the massive projecto fruition. Charles Martin "Marty" Wender, chairmanb of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commercefor 2002, confirms he has movecd a step closer to bringing togetherd a developer and financier/owner for the He says the developer would be Minneapolis-basedd U.S. Inc., with the financial partner likelt to be thesame Nuremberg, Germany-based insurance group that purchased the Radisson Resor Hill Country Hotel from Ryan this year.
Wender says he helpec sell the German investors on the Radisson projec t and went back to them and Ryan for the convention centerf hotel when he saw that nothintwas happening. "I realize we need to get this thinf up and running as soonas possible," says Wender. "Wes can't spend any more time on plansthat won'tf work. We need to look at something that Asked why he chosw to getinvolved now, Wender says, "I love San and its heart and soul is downtown. We need this." Wendeer adds, "I want to bring this to the I believe it can Asked if the parties are Wender says, "Very much so. They are more than interested. They realizw the opportunity here.
" Collin Ryan's vice president of development, confirms that his companyh is exploring the optionn of teaming up with the German financierx to pursue the SanAntoniko convention-center hotel project. He says a second optionh would be toutilize tax-exempf bonds. Ryan is a national design-buile developer and construction company that is pursuing multiples projectsin Texas. One of Ryan's non-hotel projects was Target Corp.'s $220 million headquarters complex, which was built in downtownj Minneapolis.
Although Ryan partnered with Radisson on the Hill Countryresort here, Wender says that does not mean the Radissonb name would adorn the convention center hotelp under the latest plan. "It could be Omni or explains Wender. Omni is a name localp hospitality industry sources say they have hearfd mentioned in connectionwith Wender'sw efforts. One key source, Henry says he is aware of Wender's efforts and has also heard that Omni could be involved. Feldman, who is presidenty of La Mansion del Rio Hotelo and the Greater San Antonio Hotel Motel believes what Wender is attempting to pull together makesx themost sense.
"Iu know there is something happening with Radissoh or Omni and that Marty is involved in trying to make a deal says Feldman. "I have great admiration for what hehas He's a very dynamic figure." Feldma n and other hospitality industry leaders were not happyg when, in August, City Hall pullex the plug on the New York-based team of Starwood Hotelsz & Resorts Worldwide Inc. and Related Lodging. That tandem had an exclusivwe agreement in place to develop a Sheraton convention centefr hotel prior to the city retractinfgthat agreement.
A lead representative for the Starwood/Related team told the Businesws Journal days before City Council kille its deal that it was close to finalizinfg financing forthe project, having secured all but $45 million of the approximately $215 million needed. Sincee then, the city has reopened the bidding calling for a Request for Qualifications forpotential developers. Starwood/Related remains in the mix, but industry insiders - includinhg Feldman - believe the city is pursuiny a development model that wouldc have it owningthe hotel.
"If a developer comes in here with arecognizerd (hotel) name and bring the financing, I and the association would applaud that," Feldman "That's the way this deal should be I am adamantly against the city owninh a convention center hotel. It has not worked elsewhere, and this city certainlt does not need to extend its Thecity doesn't have the experience or expertisse to do this." Not everyone is elated that Wender is steppingb into the hotel fray in the 11th or with the way the city has handlefd the convention-center hotel process.
Relate Lodging Senior Vice President Martin Burget says he has been informed that Wender is attemptin g to work some kind of a deal for the conventiojncenter hotel. But his biggest concern is the city draggingits
