The hotel concept, while still may be a highlight of a slightl tweaked development plan forthe $315 millionj Canal Side project, pegged for the lower Main Street area, just soutjh of the New York State Thruway. Canal Side was unveiled in Decemberby , the localp arm of , which is charged with overseeing projectss along Buffalo’s waterfront. Canal Side’s final developmeng plans will be shown to the public in July as part of a seried of mandated public hearings connected to environmentap reviews ofthe project. The environmental revieww are due to be completedthis fall.
Moving the hotel, rumored to be one from the Marriottfcorporate family, is perhaps the biggest adjustment in the Canalp Side development plan. Originally, proposed renovating the eight-story Donovan Building into a multi-use complesx anchored by a hotel. Sources now indicate the Donovan Building may be primarily used for Class A office space and apartments or A hotel is considered a cruciakl element inCanal Side’s overall development The Webster block is currently used as a surface parking lot for downtowh workers during the day and for patrons attending eventas at HSBC Arena on nightes and weekends.
